Your own shortcuts
How kittymux treats the keys you already use: which chords it avoids, how to find and resolve clashes, and how to rebind a kittymux key.
You probably have shortcuts you rely on: a floating scratch terminal that opens a configuration file in your editor, a font toggle, a screenshot key. kittymux is built so it does not take those from you silently.
How kitty decides
kitty loads your configuration in order, and the last definition of a chord wins. install.sh adds kittymux's include lines at the end of kitty.conf, so kittymux's keys load after yours. If both files bind the same chord, kittymux's action runs and yours stops working, with no warning from kitty.
Hyprland adds a second layer. A global chord that the window manager binds is handled before kitty sees it, so kitty never receives it. See Platforms and compatibility.
What kittymux does about it
-
It leaves common chords unbound. The chords
ctrl+alt+shift+h,k,v,z,fandxare unbound by kittymux, because setups like these often use them for scratchpad terminals that open your Hyprland, kitty, editor or shell configuration, for a font toggle or for a screenshot. kittymux's own pane title bars usectrl+alt+shift+c, and pane swap usesctrl+alt+shift+y. -
It lists your shortcuts. The keymap overlay, opened with
ctrl+alt+/, shows two extra sections beside kittymux's own:- YOURS · KITTY is every
mapin your own kitty configuration files, with the description from the comment above it when there is one. kittymux's generated files are skipped, and so are maps that only apply while a certain window has focus. - YOURS · HYPRLAND is the Hyprland binds that open terminals or scratchpads, because Hyprland sees those chords first.
A built-in row is dropped when one of your shortcuts takes its chord, so the overlay never lists something that does not run.

It reports clashes.
kittymux keyslists every chord that both your files and kittymux define with different actions, naming your file, your action and kittymux's.kittymux doctorhas the same check in its "your shortcuts" section.
kittymux keys! 2 chords are defined by both your kitty config and kittymux — kittymux's loads later, so ITS action is the one in effect:
ctrl+alt+t
yours (session-keybinds.conf): launch --type=background ~/.config/kitty/new-tab-before-scratch.sh --next
ours: launch --type=background ~/kittymux/bin/mux-newtab.sh --next
ctrl+alt+shift+t
yours (session-keybinds.conf): launch --type=background ~/.config/kitty/new-tab-before-scratch.sh
ours: launch --type=background ~/kittymux/bin/mux-newtab.shA clash is not always a problem. When kittymux's script replaces an older script of yours that does the same job, as in the example, the shared chord is intended.
Resolve a clash
You have three choices, and you can mix them.
Keep kittymux's action
Do nothing. Delete your own map line later if you want the file tidy.
Keep yours
Put your line after the kittymux include lines in kitty.conf, because the last definition wins:
include /home/you/kittymux/kittymux.conf
map ctrl+alt+t launch --type=background ~/.config/kitty/new-tab-before-scratch.sh --nextTo switch a kittymux chord off entirely, map it to nothing:
map ctrl+alt+t no_opMove kittymux's key
Edit the chord in kittymux-keys.conf.tpl and run install.sh again. Never edit the generated kittymux-keys.conf, because the next install overwrites it. Then update the key tables in the README, which a test checks against the template.
If you add a chord to kittymux
Check it against all of these before you rely on it:
- The template,
kittymux.confand your own kitty configuration. Modifier order differs between files:ctrl+shift+alt+ris the same chord asctrl+alt+shift+r. - Your window manager.
kittymux doctorchecks every chord againsthyprctl binds -j. Hyprland on HyDE's scrolling layout takesctrl+altplusa,s,f,c,x,p,w,m, the arrow keys,=and-. - A real key press, not only a test of the mapping.
ctrl+alt+p once shipped and was dead on arrival, because Hyprland took it first.
Shortcuts
Every kittymux key and mouse gesture in one place, grouped by task, plus leader mode and the keymap overlay that lists your own shortcuts too.
Customization
Choose which pieces of kittymux you use, set colours, layout and behaviour with switches and environment variables, and add your own agents.
